France: Activists with 'slit throats' denounce slaughtering of animals ahead of Eid al-Adha

Dozens of activists rallied in Paris on Thursday, on the eve of the religious Eid al-Adha holiday, to denounce the slaughtering of animals. The protesters were holding up signs, with their throats covered with fake blood to symbolise animals' slit throats during the slaughtering process.

Alexandra Blanc, founder and president of Vegan Impact, the association that is behind the protest, said that "Muslim law allows people not to slaughter sheep and instead to make donations to the poorest. So in fact it is not a mandatory practice."

Blanc added that the action also denounces the "more than three million animals in France who are slaughtered in slaughterhouses."

"We understand that the Eid holiday and the slaughtering of sheep revolts the French population, but every day it also happens in France, with or without stunning, and most of the time stunning fails, so animals are slaughtered alive. It is a societal problem that must be addressed," she explained.

An activist, Shakir, stated that taking the life of a being who "does not want to die" is "unacceptable."

Eid al-Adha marks the end of the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca and is the second of two globally celebrated holidays in Islam, the other being Eid Al-Fitr.

During the holiday, an animal, usually a sheep, is ritually sacrificed and distributed to the poor and needy, and to relatives.
