USA: Protesters and federal officers clash in Portland

United States, Portland
July 26, 2020 at 06:54 GMT -00:00 · Published

Clashes erupted as protesters and federal officers faced off by the Mark O. Hatfield Federal Courthouse in Portland, on Saturday.

Fireworks were thrown at federal agents who were standing behind a fence.

Demonstrators had gathered after a US judge denied Oregon’s request to restrict federal officers’ actions during arrests at protests

The lawsuit by Oregon’s attorney general, Ellen Rosenblum, denied on Friday, argued that the operations of federal authorities, who were using unmarked vehicles to drive around downtown Portland and detain protesters, resembled abductions.

During Friday’s protest, federal officers used tear gas to try to disperse a large crowd of protesters outside Mark O. Hatfield Federal Courthouse after multiple fireworks were aimed at the building by demonstrators. Protesters also pushed a fence built around the building and threw objects over it.

According to local reports, at least 4,000 people poured into the city centre on Friday night. It was the largest crowd since early weeks of the protests that started in late May.

On Wednesday, July 22, US President Donald Trump announced a surge of federal law enforcement into cities run by Democrats, including Portland, as part of his "law and order" campaign.
