The United States government closed the consulate of China in Houston on Wednesday following reports that Chinese officials had allegedly burned documents in the building's courtyard late Tuesday evening.

Footage shows the Chinese consulate exterior located on Montrose Boulevard in Houston.

Beijing condemned the move while US State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus described the move as a way to protect American intellectual property and private data.

US and China have repeatedly clashed within the past months over their trade deal, the coronavirus pandemic, and China's imposition of a controversial new security law on Hong Kong.
