Ukraine: Lutsk gunman surrenders, all hostages released
The gunman who hijacked a bus and took hostages in Lutsk on Tuesday surrendered to the police following an hours-long standoff in the west Ukrainian city.
The gunman released three of the hostages after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky fulfilled one of his demands and recorded a short video address and released it online.
According to Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, the perpetrator then released the rest of the hostages, came out of the bus, and surrendered.
Avakov added that all the hostages were unhurt in the incident and that a suspected accomplice of the gunman has been detained in Kharkiv.
The perpetrator, identified by the police as 44-year old Ukrainian citizen Maksym Kryvosh, hijacked the commuter bus and took the passengers hostage at around 09:25 a.m. local time (06:25 GMT).
The police earlier cordoned off the Lutsk centre after the man opened fire at the law enforcement and claimed to have planted a remote-controlled explosive device in a public place in the city.
Ukraine’s Deputy Interior Minister Anton Gerashchenko wrote on Facebook that the suspect had previously spent around 10 years behind bars on charges including fraud and illegal handling of firearms.
