USA: Food workers strike in Oakland against racism and economic inequality

As part of a national movement calling on black people and allies to strike for better work conditions, BLM activists gathered with minimum wage activists in front of McDonald's Oakland on Monday. Several McDonald's workers took part in a strike demanding better working conditions.

Protesters were seen carrying signs reading "Black Lives Matter," "McDonald's: protect essential workers," "Unions for all, rise up," and "Strike for black and brown lives," as they took part in the nationwide protest.

Oakland McDonald's has been in recent months at the centre of a work reform issue after 11 workers were diagnosed with the COVID-19 virus. According to workers, they were not given appropriate protection for themselves and the customers, forcing them to even wear "dog diapers" as face masks.

"We are here today to protest about the equality, about for the workers here and about the 'Black Lives Matter.' We just want justice to be made," said Juana Martin, a McDonald's employee

Workers were asking McDonald's to raise their minimum wage at least as long as the pandemic lasts, especially after serving the public without adequate protection against coronavirus.

"We deal with a lot of things every day and the wage, not even 16 dollars will help. Because we all have families, a lot of people started to work at a young age to support their families. We need to increase the wage because it is not fair the way that we are treated, they expect more from us and they give us less," added Martin.

Another McDonald's worker, Rosi Flores said she was striking along with her co-workers after "a lot of us got infected. We are asking for better protection and paid quarantines, for our health and for that of our families."
