Newly-crowned Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) bantamweight champion Petr Yan talked about winning the title and his life in the sport, speaking in an exclusive interview to RT in Abu Dhabi on Friday.

"This was the toughest fight in my career due to different factors: psychological issue, conditions we were in for the first time," Yan said of his defeat of Brazilian MMA legend Jose Aldo to claim the UFC championship belt last weekend.

Yan also talked about the importance of his coach, former Irish boxer John Hutchinson.

"Jonnyboy is my coach, we have been working together for a year and a half. He is purely a boxing trainer but I like his energy and him as a person. He does his job and I feel that he is totally there for me."

Having now won the bantamweight belt, the Siberian martial artist hinted he could at some point be tempted by a move up to featherweight.

"I would probably go up in weight, not because I weigh a lot… If I wanted I would probably be able to lose weight to take part in the lower weight category but it is not interesting for me. I am more interested in testing myself against stronger and more dangerous guys,” the champ said.

Yan also acknowledged he could still improve as a fighter and that there were "no limits" for his growth.

“There is a lot to work on in every aspect: striking, wrestling. Each fight we try to add something and to learn from our experience. I am young, there is an opportunity for growth and with each new fight I will try to develop my skills,” he said.

Yan beat former UFC champion Jose Aldo at the Abu Dhabi event on July 12, becoming Russia’s second current UFC title-holder after lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
