Penguins at Japanese aquarium treated to own version of summer tradition with fish water slide

A summer food tradition in Japan has been passed on to the avian world, with a group of hungry Cape penguins in Numazu happily joining in on Sunday.

In the late summer months, the Awashima Marine Park holds a daily show for visitors where they can watch the penguins feast on mackerel 'Nagashi' style - deriving from a Japanese culinary practice of eating 'somen' - thin wheat noodles - from a water slide.

"We would like visitors to pay attention to the cute movement of penguins, that takes advantage of their instincts, which the penguins follow and eat the flowing horse mackerel, with their own eyes," said Noriko Kunihara, a staff member at the marine park.

Cape penguins, an endangered species hailing from the warm waters of South Africa, are well-adapted to strut for zoo-goers outdoors in the summertime, and while they travel in groups, still maintain their idiosyncrasies according to Kunihara.

"One of the fun things about rearing penguins is that each penguin has its own character and personality. Even while feeding fish at the event, some of the penguins wait for the fish from the first at the top of the line, some of them snatch others' fish and eat it, and there are also penguins who just keep waiting in front of basket," she said.

The tradition of Nagashi reportedly began in the southern Japanese town of Takachiho, after a local restaurant owner commercialised the town's practice of cooling boiled noodles in a nearby waterfall. It has since become popular all over Japan.
