Meet Ahmad the Iranian disabled freestyle footballer and Paralympian hopeful

Iranian 22-year-old disabled freestyler Ahmad Babaieia has a dream similar to millions of other young people - to be a professional athlete. Ahmad, however, was born with a condition affecting both of his legs and an arm. He explained the challenges he faces as he showed off his impressive football and sprinting skills in Tehran on Saturday.

"Ever since I found out I have this talent since I was a child, I have been passionate about football, when we played with the kids. It's true that I was a little weaker physically, but I was able to keep trying and get here," explained Ahmad as he showed off his remarkable dribbling and juggling talents to a few lucky passersby at Azadi Square.

Challenges do not scare Ahmad who has continued his training at home and in open spaces due to recent COVID-19 confinement measures, as he hopes to participate in the Tokyo Paralympics next year.

"We live in a poor neighbourhood. With all the difficulties and problems we had, I was able to get the first and second place in the country in the 100 metres [race], and if we are supported, I promise to win in the Paralympic as well," said Ahmad.

He explained that his strenuous training routine consists of two hours a day on a regular calendar day and up to seven hours when he is preparing for competitions.
