Russia: More than 130 detained at unsanctioned rally against constitutional amendments

At least 132 protesters were detained at an unauthorised protest against the constitutional amendments and the reset of presidential term limits in Moscow on Wednesday.

According to Russia’s Interior Ministry, "police officers, together with the National Guard, managed to suppress the violation of public order in central Moscow, 132 people were brought to the local police departments."

The rally started in the central Pushkin Square where the protest organisers planned to collect signatures for the cancellation of the plebiscite results.

Later the demonstrators marched along the Boulevard Ring, blocking traffic on the Petrovskiy Boulevard.

Law enforcement officers warned the protesters they were violating the ban on public gatherings and asked to clear the roadway, after which the detentions began.

Russian voters overwhelmingly backed the reforms to the constitution in the week-long plebiscite that ended on July 1, with nearly 78 percent voting in favour of the amendments.

The amendments came into effect on July 4 and include banning important officials from having foreign citizenship and restricting all future presidents' time in office to a total of two terms.

The reforms also reset the terms already served by President Vladimir Putin, allowing him to run again for the fifth term in 2024, potentially staying in power until 2036.
