The El Volador workshop, located in City of Mexico, has begun to produce COVID-19 protection masks in the shape of the traditional Mexican Day of the Dead skulls - or calavera.

The artists at this workshop in the Mexican capital make these colourful ‘catrina-like’ masks to help maintain social distancing measures and reduce the risk of contagion.

Before the pandemic, El Volador was dedicated to create sets for parades and shows.

"We are a workshop dedicated to art and entertainment, and, as part of the situation we are experiencing due to lack of employment, we decided to put some style and [Mexican] roots to these masks that are used to prevent covid,” said Paco Enriquez, artist at the El Volador workshop, on Tuesday.

The basic masks cost 180 pesos [7 euros, 8 US dollars], and there is a version that includes a personalisation kit with stickers that costs 230 pesos (€9; $10.10).

The Mexican Ministry of Health reported on Tuesday that the country has a total of 311,486 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 36,327 people who died with the virus.
