USA: Hundreds hit Seattle streets to denounce ICE

United States, Seattle
July 14, 2020 at 01:17 GMT -00:00 · Published

Hundreds of protesters marched through Seattle's downtown on Sunday, denouncing the US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.

"I just think it's unfair that kids are sitting in cages right now, it's, you know, they're innocent kids that were, you know, in search of a better opportunity," said one protester.

ICE operates a network of detention centres in the United States, where migrants are often held indefinitely, and has been criticised by human rights groups for its practices.

The agency also announced last week that it may revoke visas for international students whose universities will offer online-only courses, which have been used since COVID-19 began shutting down university and college campuses.

Several states filed a federal lawsuit against the policy, arguing that it violates the Administrative Procedure Act, which outlines procedures for federal agencies to enact rules.

The new rule follows suit with the Trump administration's tightening of immigration restrictions during the pandemic, having earlier suspended H-1B1 visas for skilled workers until December.
