Hong Kong: Lam warns 'primary' by pro-democracy groups may be punished by national security law

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam warned that actions by pro-democracy groups staging a 'primary' vote over the weekend may amount to subversion which can be punished under the newly-imposed national security law.

"I hope that people will not be confused by the so-called primary; it is not part Hong-Kong's electoral system," said Lam at a news conference on Monday.

More than 600,000 people cast their vote to decide upon candidates for the Legislative Council elections which will take place in September

The Hong Kong chief executive also announced tightening of COVID-19 restrictions due to increasing numbers of local cases over the past week.

From Wednesday restaurants will be closed between 6:00 pm and 5:00 am, face masks will be mandatory in public transport and public gatherings will be limited from 50 to four people. In addition gyms, bars, cinemas and beauty salons will be closed for a week.

"I think that based on what we have seen in the last seven or eight days about the re-emergence of local cases and the spread and the diversity of these local cases this is the time for tightening," said Lam.

Earlier today the health authorities reported 52 new cases, of which 41 were local transmissions.
