Serbia: Police break up protests outside National Assembly in Belgrade

Serbia, Belgrade
July 12, 2020 at 04:18 GMT -00:00 · Published

Protesters demonstrated outside of Serbia's House of the National Assembly on Saturday night, before being dispersed by police and driven away from the area.

Police emerged from the National Assembly building after a small group, who had earlier burnt the ruling Serbian Progressive party's flag, reportedly attempted to break in.

"We want fair and democratic elections and we want politicians to be the ones to represent the will of the people, and the will of the people was not heard in these elections," said Sladjana Javorovac, who participated in the protests.

Demonstrations outside of the governmental building began last Tuesday in response to the country's president, Aleksandar Vucic, announced plans to impose a weekend curfew due to a rise in coronavirus infections. Though the plans have since been cancelled, anti-government sentiment has persisted.

Vucic himself has described the anti-government protesters as "criminal hooligans" and blamed possible "foreign meddling” for the unrest.

His party recently scored 191 of the country's 250 parliamentary seats at elections in June, while the country's main opposing coalition, Alliance for Serbia, boycotted the vote.
