Romania: COVID-19 drive-thru testing centre opens in Bucharest as cases spike

A coronavirus drive-through testing centre, managed by a private clinic, opened up in northern Bucharest, as COVID-19 infections spiked in the country.

Locals from the capital city were seen having their tests performed on Saturday, as the number of vehicles waiting for their turn increased.

"The rate of positive testing is increasing. So, when we opened the centre we had about two or three per cent positive in a day, now we are reaching about 8 to 10 per cent," said doctor Mihai.

"Romanian people they love to party, they love to go out, they love to be close one to each other. But now we have to understand that this is not the right time to do that, we have to change our habits, and we have to understand that the mask is the most important thing that is going to stop the spreading of the virus," he added.

According to reports, Romania has been experiencing a spike in coronavirus infections in the past two weeks, with nearly 700 cases registered the last 24 hours, making it the worst daily record since the beginning of the outbreak.

According to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, over 32,000 coronavirus infections have been reported in Romania so far, with 1,871 related deaths.
