Syria: Residents struggle after Turkish forces cut water to Hasakah

Syrian Arab Republic, Hasakah
July 9, 2020 at 02:29 GMT -00:00 · Published

Turkish forces have reportedly halted operations at the Aluk water station, which supplies the Syrian city of Hasakah and the surrounding area, for the seventh time since they took control of the station in the northern countryside of Hasakah.

Footage from Wednesday shows residents using water tanks and plastic pans to transport water. Several locals expressed their dissatisfaction with the scarcity of drinking water in the city.

One elderly resident, Sultana Abdullah, said "We have suffered, there is no water or even bread, and there is nothing. We ask you to bring us water and electricity here."

Another resident said that they "cannot wash our faces; we have had fifteen days without water. There are no tanks that come and [supply] water every fifteen days. And when [water] comes, it is weak, we do not benefit from it, and we are looking to buy water with cash. And there is none".

Head of the Electricity Directorate in Hasakah Governorate, Suzlan Ahmed, said that "over the past three days, the Turkish state has been extinguishing the Aluk station on the orders of the Turkish general. Of course, they have no argument and no reason to cut off the water, but rather it controls human subsistence."

She added that the Directorate is working to find an emergency solution to the water problem by drilling wells in the Hammam region, but "the materials needed to supply these wells are not available in the local market, as the processing of these wells has been delayed."
