Hong Kong: Lam attends opening ceremony of new national security office

Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region of China, Hong Kong

An office "for safeguarding national security" opened in Hong Kong on Wednesday, with an inauguration ceremony attended by Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam and other officials.

Attendees stood and watched as the Chinese flag was raised outside the new office while China's national anthem was played.

Lam said that the new national security law, and the office, would allow "the turnaround of Hong Kong society from disorder to stability."

"Hong Kong is expected to return stability and the citizens' freedom and rights will be protected better," she added.

She stated that the office was justified as the "central government needs to retain its power to deal with situations where a few SARs [special administrative regions] cannot endanger national security and ensure that national security is foolproof under all circumstances."

The office will serve as the homebase from which, for the first time, mainland security personnel will be able to investigate people in Hong Kong for crimes under the new national security law, with suspects potentially facing extradition to the mainland.

The national security law for the semi-autonomous territory was implemented last week. The first person charged under the national security law, Tong Ying-Kit, had been denied bail at court after been charged with inciting terrorism and secession as he allegedly drove his motorbike into police officers whilst holding a sign reading "Liberate Hong Kong" on July 1.
