Japan: Residents of Hitoyoshi react in aftermath of deadly floods
Hitoyoshi residents commented on the weekend's floods and mudslides on Tuesday as they worked to clean up their houses and businesses in the Japanese prefecture of Kumamoto.
"When the floodwaters overflowed, I was on the second floor of the next house. In about 20 minutes, the waters went up, and then I was rescued by boat to the evacuation centre," explained a resident at the scene as citizens came together to clear up the rubbish and debris.
The residents of Hitoyoshi were reportedly left without electricity due to the heavy floods.
At least 34 people were killed and more than a dozen were still missing after heavy rains triggered floods and mudslides on Saturday.
