The first person charged under Hong Kong's new national security law arrived at the West Kowloon Law Court on Monday morning, where he was denied bail during a court hearing.

Tong Ying-Kit was charged with inciting terrorism and secession after he allegedly drove his motorbike into police officers whilst holding a sign reading "Liberate Hong Kong" on July 1.

"His spirits and body are fine. Second, he ask all of us to carry on, to work for Hong Kong. And lastly, he's totally grateful for the press attention," said Lawrence Lau Wai Chung, the lawyer representing Tong.

Hong Kong authorities have said that the usage of protest slogan "Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times" represents a subversive act against the state and can be prosecuted.

Tong will reportedly remain in custody until October 6, when he is scheduled to once again appear in court.

The law passed last Tuesday afternoon will see the opening of an office in charge of criminal cases related to national security in Hong Kong, to target subversion, secession, terrorism and collusion with foreign or external forces seeking to interfere with the HKSAR's affairs.
