Following a two-year adventure with the goal of being the first person to row from South America to Asia, Latvian nation, Karlis Bardelis has been trapped at the Johor docks, as according to footage from Saturday.

Bardelis is currently stranded, unable to enter the country due to coronavirus restrictions. Malaysia has closed its borders to travellers until August 31.

Bardelis can be seen sat in his boat on the water, next to the pier. He is hoping the Malaysian government will grant him special permission to allow him to enter land next week if he quarantines for 14 days. The Latvian authorities are liaising with the local government, Bardelis said.

He arrived on the coast of Malaysia on June 29, just two weeks short of the two-year anniversary.

The journey began two years ago, after Bardelis said he had crossed South American by tandem bike in 2018 and crossed the Atlantic boat in the same boat as now.

"There was some territory with a lot of sharks. I think they thought that this is a food which is floating in the sea. So they tried to hit and flip the boat but the boat was stable. So the shark was hitting the boat with such a force that, I don't know if you're standing behind the door and someone from the opposite site throwing the brick. And the sound on the opposite site was the same like the shark hitting my boat," he said, recalling some of the most terrifying moments on his journey.

Other risky moments, included crossing the Malacca Straits, one of busiest marine traffic channels in the world.

"So, it's many big vessels, 330 meters long tankers and when they come so close to your boat, it's really scary. But at the same time, I have to be really focused, really sharp because I had to communicate with them to try to maneuverer because my boat doesn't have an engine, doesn't have a sail so only my ability to maneuverer with the oars. But those tankers they have inertia and they can maneuverer," said Bardelis.

Malaysia confirmed over 8,500 cases of coronavirus, with 121 linked deaths, according to data compiled by the Johns Hopkins University.
