Cuba: Havana residents rejoice amid easing of lockdown measures

Cuba, Havana
July 4, 2020 at 03:21 GMT -00:00 · Published

Residents of Cuba's capital city Havana reacted on Friday to the beginning of the easing of the lockdown in Havana, as most of the rest of the country is moving to phase two of de-escalation measures amid the coronavirus pandemic.

One of the locals praised the government's decision to start easing restrictions, saying that "the government's opinion has been very good, deciding to re-establish transportation, the food for the people, all of this, and we see it very good. Why? Because in the end the disease is not going to go away with us staying in lockdown at home, but taking care of ourselves."

"It is good that we have entered the first phase because we have to do something, but I have always said that everything has been managed by the medicine, everything, but it is the population the one who needs to take measures, now it's our time to take care of ourselves," added another elderly woman.

According to reports, Havana entered the phase one of the de-escalation plan of three steps to return to normality set by the government, with urban public transport resuming services and domestic tourism being allowed.

As of Friday, over 2,360 cases of coronavirus were reported in Cuba with 86 related deaths, as figures from Johns Hopkins University show.
