Germany: Trial of woman who allegedly helped IS begins in Celle

Germany, Celle
July 3, 2020 at 14:21 GMT -00:00 · Published

The trial of a German-Syrian woman accused of working for the Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) started on Friday at the Higher Regional Court in the northern German city of Celle.

The defendant, identified as Lorin I. faces charges of enabling and convincing her husband to fight with IS, being a member of a "terrorist organisation" and for violating Germany's war weapons control act. The sentence ranges from one to ten years of imprisonment.

"What makes this special is that this is the first trial at the Higher Regional Court in which a woman is accused of being a member of the so called Islamic State where she allegedly tried to recruit other women to travel to Syria, to join the IS there and to be married off to IS fighters," said Rainer Derks, judge and spokesperson of Higher Regional Court Celle.

The woman admitted to having travelled to Syria with her husband in 2014, but that she regretted it and sought to distance herself from the armed group.

"No, she is not a terrorist. She said today, 'I made a big mistake, I went there, this was the biggest mistake of my life' and shortly after travelling there, she saw that the promises that were made they aren't true, that they are barbarians," said Seda Basay-Yildiz, her Defence Lawyer.

Basay-Yildiz added that she expects a conviction, but hope that it will be a "punishment that is tolerable."

About 200 women of German nationality are alleged to have joined the IS caliphate, Lorin I. has a double nationality of German and Syrian heritage.
