Hong Kong: Freedom of speech protected under security law says Lam

Speaking at a press conference in Hong Kong on Wednesday - the day after the region's sweeping national security law came into effect - Chief Executive Carrie Lam stated that freedom of speech and the ability to criticise the government would not be considered crimes under the new legislation.

"If individuals, including reporters from CNN, they are discharging their role and they feel that something is not right, they want to criticise, I don't see why that will become an offence under this piece of law. But of course, if there are more behind it, if you are involved in organising or colluding, and so on and so on, that is another matter," Lam said.

Executive Lam also emphasised the purpose of "deterrence" in the legislation, stating that the law would prevent "serious offences" from being committed.

The new law makes acts of secession, subversion, terrorism, and collusion with foreign entities illegal and punishable with multi-year prison sentences.

Hundreds were arrested in Hong Kong on Wednesday, after citizens organised unauthorised protests commemorating the handover of the city's administration from Britain to China.
