Safe salsa: Madrid dancer uses ropes to maintain physical distancing

Salsa dancer Juan Diego 'Timbera', came up with a brilliant idea to keep on dancing while maintaining physical distance at the same time, by using ropes instead of holding hands while dancing.

Diego could be seen using ropes while dancing with passers-by at the famous Preciados Street in Madrid on Wednesday and Thursday.

"I had the idea of dancing with people who were passing by on the streets of Madrid, because when I was dancing with my friends I saw that we made a huddle, but people didn't want to dance," said Diego, who added that "I made a banner inviting people to dance with the phrases 'Dance, one word can change your life' and 'Dance, dancing is the best medicine'."

The salsa dancer started searching for an idea to enjoy his dancing passion while adhering, at the same time, to physical-distancing rules imposed after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. So he came up with the idea of dancing with ropes "after watching people dancing with broomsticks," and described the idea to be coming "from my heart," he said.

The 29 years-old cook from Peru, who has been living in the Spanish capital since the age of 11, regarded dancing as "living in the now, in the present," and "a way to break the monotony," and identified himself with the Cuban music which "gets into my soul," he said.

Diego creates videos of his dances with the passers-by and shares them on his social media accounts, which have attracted many followers, among them American actor Will Smith who has shared one of his videos.
