UK: EasyJet planes parked at London airport ahead of possible closure of bases
The Luton-based budget airline easyJet revealed on Tuesday that the company is considering closing three of its bases in the UK as part of a cost-cutting measure made necessary to recover the aviation industry being hit massively by the coronavirus outbreak. The company's planes could be seen lined up at London Southend Airport, in Southend-on-Sea, Tuesday.
The airline announced that bases at London Southend Airport, as well as London Stansted and Newcastle airport may be forced to close. EasyJet also announced that thirty percent of its workforce may need to be cut, putting up to 5,000 jobs at risk.
The announcement comes on the same day that French aviation giant Airbus announced cutting of reportedly 15,000 jobs, equivalent to 17 percent of its workforce, over the next 12 months due to the COVID-19 outbreak that has decimated the industry.
