Poland: Warsaw residents share hopes ahead of Sunday's delayed presidential election

Warsaw residents shared their hopes ahead of the upcoming presidential election in the Polish capital on Saturday.

Poland is set to vote for a new president on Sunday in a poll that was originally scheduled to take place in May but that was delayed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

“There is a Poland A and a Poland B but no-one sees that there is also a Poland X that doesn’t belong to one or another side. This group is in-between and they cannot live properly. They (politicians) are trying to pull them on their side. They try to prove that their decision is better than mine," said Pavel, a local.

"We are upset about how we are stripped of our freedoms. And I am worried that if nothing changes our situation will even jeopardise. With each month they will feel more secure and will take more and more," opined Marta, another resident.

Incumbent President Andrzej Duda is facing off against several candidates and is leading in the polls but is not expected to get achieve the 51 percent or more required to win outright and avoid a second round run-off.

The candidate of the centre-right Civic Platform (PO) party, Rafal Trzaskowski, is polling in second place, with around 30 percent of the expected vote, which would be enough to propel him into the second round against Duda, set to be held on July 12.

Trzaskowski, the current mayor of Warsaw, is regarded as pro-EU and a supporter of LGBTQ+ rights, while Duda enjoys the support of the ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party.
