Germany: Lufthansa employees protest in Frankfurt over drastic job cut fears

Germany, Frankfurt
June 24, 2020 at 19:54 GMT -00:00 · Published

Hundreds of Lufthansa employees gathered in front of the airline headquarters in Frankfurt on Wednesday demanding their jobs to be protected as the company announced plans to put tens of thousands of people out of work due to the coronavirus crisis.

Cabin crew members, pilots and ground workers showed support for the rescue package plan proposed by the German Federal government.

"We want to get as many people as possible to vote for the rescue package and thus preserve our jobs, as many as possible," Olaf Braun, a Lufthansa Employee, told Ruptly.

Marion Vaillon, an employee who's been in the company for 30 years, implored major shareholder Heinz Hermann Thiele to "reconsider his opinion on the rescue package" because workers are worried and afraid of losing their jobs. Around 22,000 jobs are at stake.

Lufthansa shareholders are expected to convene for the decisive annual general meeting on Thursday, June 25, to vote on the 9 billion euros (10.2 billion dollars) state aid package for federal capital participation.

The largest German airline and second-largest in Europe in terms of passenger numbers has experienced almost zero traffic due to the coronavirus pandemic and is facing insolvency and drastic job cuts if the bailout is not accepted.

The plan has to be approved by the shareholders with a two-thirds majority. German billionaire Heinz Hermann Thiele, who has a 15.5 percent stake in Lufthansa alone, already spoke against the offer and may block the rescue at the Thursday meeting.
