USA: Thousands rally against racism in faith-based ‘March on Atlanta’ on Juneteenth

United States, Atlanta

Thousands of people from hundreds of different areas around Atlanta came together to celebrate the historical Juneteenth rally in support of the fight for justice, freedom, and equality in Atlanta on Friday.

The 'March on Atlanta' was organised by OneRace, a diverse Christian-based group of young adults, who are calling for a clear biblical response of righteousness and justice in the light of the racially motivated violence of the past several weeks, and the corresponding protests across our nation.

"It is not only a day of celebration, but it is a day of awareness, it is a day of acknowledgement, and it is a day of ratification. It is time for us, as America to recognise there is injustice in America, and until America recognises this there will never be peace," said a protester.

Demonstrators were seen with signs reading "Reconcile & Revive," as they were chanting "Black lives matter."

"I think as an African American female that we need to show up and be present. Because a lot of the things that we have seen have been affecting black males, but are their counterparts, so what affects them, affects us as well. As a mother, as a sister, as an aunt, as a daughter, all these things matter to me and I think we need to show up, be present and be accountable," said a local demonstrator.

This year's Juneteenth takes place in the wake of nationwide protests and racial tensions over racism and police brutality following the recent killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Rayshard Brooks and other black Americans.

On June 19, 1865, Union army general Gordon Granger proclaimed in Galveston, Texas that all enslaved African-Americans in the state were free, belatedly enforcing President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.
