South Africa: 34-year-old gorilla Makokou undergoes nasal surgery in Johannesburg

A 34-year-old western lowland gorilla named Makokou underwent a nasal surgery to have inflammatory polyps that were affecting his breathing removed in Johannesburg on Saturday.

A specialised team of veterinarians was seen getting ready to anaesthetise the giant primate, minutes before being loaded into a pick-up and taken to surgery. Makokou was also spotted laying on the operation table as his polyps were being removed.

"We got a lot bunch of instruments inside the nose to try to deal with these polyps, these inflammatory polyps that have been blocking his nose and that has been a problem for quite a few months now. They are cutting away all these polyps so that he is able to breathe," explained one of the doctors.

Days before his operation, Makokou was flown to the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital in Pretoria, to have a computer tomography scan performed after failing to recover from from a chronic nasal discharge he was experiencing since December. A biopsy of a nasal growth found was later sent for histopathology, which showed that the gorilla's issue was chronic Rhinitis and inflammatory polyps emerging in his nasal passages.

Makokou, who was born in the Stuttgart Zoo in Germany, has been living at Johannesburg zoo since he was 19 years of age.
