Hong Kong: Students, labour unions hold unofficial referendum on security law

Students and union members kicked off an unofficial referendum in Hong Kong on Saturday, to decide whether a walkout will be stage in opposition to the national security law planned by Beijing.

The referendum organised by a coalition of 30 trade unions represents the latest effort in the pro-democracy camp. With voting stations set up across the city-state, they are reportedly seeking to attract at least 36,000 signatures to go ahead with a general strike. Unions hope to get more than 60,000 signatures.

"We want to send a strong message to the Communist Party and we urge the Hong Kong students to come out and vote. This is our final chance to fight against the national evil security law and we hope that the students can see that. We have to change the conditions now," said Isaac Cheng, vice-chairman of Demosisto.

China's National People's Congress voted in favour of drafting the law, which would ban sedition, foreign interference, and treason, while circumventing Hong Kong's legislature, on May 28.
