Switzerland: 'I am my brother’s keeper' - George Floyd’s brother addresses UNHRC

George Floyd's brother Philonise Floyd made a plea to the United Nations to investigate the killing of Black people by US police, during a UN Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva on Wednesday.

"You watched my brother die. That could have been me," Floyd told the UN Human Rights Council via video message. "I am my brother's keeper. You in the United Nations are your brothers and sisters' keepers in America and you have the power to help us get justice for my brother George Floyd."

Floyd said that his brother's murder showed that "black lives do not matter in the United States of America."

Wednesday's debate was requested by the African Group, made up of 54 member states from the African continent.

"Patience has run out. Black lives matter. Indigenous lives matter. The lives of people of colour matter. All human beings are born equal in dignity and rights and that is what this Council, like my Office, stands for," said UN Human Rights chief Michelle Bachelet.

"Today, people are saying, loudly and movingly, 'Enough.' The United Nations has a duty to respond to the anguish that has been felt by so many for so long," said UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed. "Just as we fought apartheid years ago, so must we fight the hatred, oppression and humiliation today."

Demonstrations against racism and police brutality have been taking place across the world following the killing of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer in Minneapolis on May 25, with the recent shooting of Rayshard Brooks in Atlanta adding further fuel to protests.
