USA: Senate Judiciary Committee convenes in DC on policing practices

United States, Washington DC

The United States Senate Judiciary Committee convened in Washington DC on Tuesday, where it discussed issues related to police use of force and community relations. The hearing took place against the backdrop of widespread outcry against police brutality, prompted by the killing of George Floyd.

This hearing took place one day ahead of the unveiling of a plan for police reform legislation, prepared by the Republican Party. Louisiana Senator John Kennedy, one of the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said: "I think it's important that we do the reform bill before we do the NDAA [National Defense Authorization Act]."

Lee Merritt, an attorney who represents families of several police brutality victims, was also present in the function as a witness. "The executive order does some things; it represents incremental change. We are hoping for a lot more radical change from the Senate, from the Congress, and that's what we plan to go and talk about," he told journalists outside the Hart Senate Office Building.

Democratic Senator Kamala Harris was also filmed arriving at the building to participate in the hearing.
