USA: Trump signs executive order on safer police practices

United States, Washington DC
June 16, 2020 at 18:29 GMT -00:00 · Published

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order urging police departments across the country to "adopt the highest professional standards to serve their communities" in Washington DC on Tuesday.

Trump announced the order at the White House's Rose Garden, after meeting with the families of people who were killed by police violence.

The order will ban chokeholds "except if an officer's life is at risk," Trump said. It will also prioritise federal grants to police departments that meet high standards on the use of force and de-escalation training.

"I will say we've dealt with all of the various departments, and everybody said it's time, we have to do it. Additionally, we're looking at new advanced and powerful less lethal weapons to help prevent deadly interactions," added the US President.

"Under this executive order departments will also need a share of information about credible abuses so that officers with significant issues do not simply move from one police department to the next," Trump continued.

Speaking about the nationwide protests against racism and police brutality, Trump said there would be "grave" penalties for "looting or arson" by protesters.

"Violence and destruction will not be tolerated, we cannot do that. The looters have no cause that they are fighting for, they're just trouble," said Trump.

Demonstrations against racism and police brutality have been taking place across the world following the killing of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer in Minneapolis on May 25.
