USA: BLM protesters block highway in DC

United States, Washington DC
June 16, 2020 at 07:01 GMT -00:00 · Published

Hundreds of 'Black Lives Matter' activists blocked a part of a five-lane highway in Washington DC on Monday, to voice their anger over George Floyd's death in police custody, the fatal police shooting of Breonna Taylor in March, and the recent shooting of Rayshard Brooks in Atlanta.

Footage shows people protesting on the highway with several demonstrators arguing with commuters and later with police officers. No arrests were reported.

"Enough is enough. It doesn't matter what colour you are: black, white, blue, purple or whatever," said Raymond, a protester.

He added, "we need justice at least we all can get together and live the life we are supposed to live."

Before making their way to the highway, protesters marched in DC downtown by the White House. The march began outside St. John's Church, where protesters had been forced away by police and military forces ahead of US President Donald Trump's visit two weeks ago.

Demonstrations against racism and police brutality have been taking place across the world following the killing of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer in Minneapolis on May 25.
