USA: NAACP leads 'march on Georgia' following Rayshard Brooks shooting in Atlanta

United States, Atlanta

Thousands of people joined the NAACP [National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People] to march against racism and police brutality in downtown Atlanta on Monday, after the fatal police shooting of Rayshard Brooks in the Georgia city on Friday night.

Protesters marched from the Richard B. Russell Federal Building to the Georgia Capitol, in a march that also addressed the criminal justice system and voting rights.

The march took place one day after the autopsy of 27-year old Brooks revealed he was shot twice in the back and died from organ injuries and blood loss.

Brooks was allegedly found asleep in his car at the Wendy's drive-through on Friday. According to authorities, Brooks failed a sobriety test, a struggle broke out and he took one of the officers' tasers before running away.

Atlanta's police chief Erika Shields resigned in the wake of the shooting, while the officer alleged to have shot Brooks, Garret Rolfe, was fired, and the other officer at the scene, Devin Bronsan, has been assigned administrative duties.

Anti-racism demonstrations have been taking place across the world following the killing of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer in Minneapolis on May 25.
