USA: Memorial set up near burnt Wendy's where Rayshard Brooks was shot

United States, Atlanta
June 15, 2020 at 06:01 GMT -00:00 · Published

Demonstrators gathered near the burnt ruins of a Wendy's fast food restaurant in Atlanta on Sunday, after the fatal police shooting of Rayshard Brooks outside the location on Friday night.

Samuel Watts Junior, one of the demonstrators and a veteran of the US Marine Corps, spoke about the discrepancy between the US military's rules of engagement, and the police's treatment of African Americans in the United States.

"You cannot shoot the enemy unless you are shot upon, so why is it that we can go to Iraq and we cannot shoot at another country before we are fired on, but the police officers, whether you are black, white, green, yellow, white or blue, you can shoot at an innocent black man, without any fucking harm. Without any weapons drawn on you. A black man running from you, how is it that you can shoot him, kill him, and the only you get is fired from your job," he said.

On Saturday dozens of protesters gathered near Wendy's where the shooting happened, blocking the highway and setting the building on fire as tensions remain high between police and protesters since George Floyd's killing in Minneapolis.

Atlanta's police chief Erika Shields resigned in the wake of the shooting, while the officer alleged to have shot Brooks, Garret Rolfe, was fired, and the other officer at the scene, Devin Bronsan, was assigned administrative duties.
