UK: Tempers flare in Trafalgar square as far-right demo and BLM rally come face-to-face

United Kingdom, London

Scuffles erupted as far-right protesters and Black Lives Matter (BLM) activists held rallies in London's Trafalgar Square on Saturday, resulting in several arrests.

The far-right protesters predominately consisted of activists from the English Defence League (EDL) and the Democratic Football Lads Alliance (DFLA), reportedly gathered to protect Nelson's Column from potential vandalism, as it has been the case with other monuments during previous BLM protests across the country.

"I think that if you're fighting for anything that's just, there's always going to be provocations from the other sides; there's always going to be people that don't want change because the situation now accommodates them. So, I think it's totally normal that there are provocations, but it's important to stay focused and to remember why you're here, and not just give in to these acts of violence and injustice," said one BLM activist.

Protests have been taking place in the US and around the world since the death of 46-year-old George Floyd during a police encounter in Minneapolis on May 25, reigniting the Black Lives Matter movement, which denounces a pattern of unarmed black men, women, and children killed by police.

In the UK, on Thursday night, scaffolding was erected around the Churchill statue, the Cenotaph on Whitehall, and the statues of George Washington and King James II in Trafalgar square amid concerns they would be vandalised.
