Hundreds of protesters gathered in an unauthorised rally against police brutality following a call from the "Justice for Adam" and "Black Lives Matter" movements in Paris on Saturday, that ended up in scuffles with police.

Police officers were seen lined up next to the 'Statue de la Republique' amid protesters, with tear gas being thrown into the crowd of demonstrators.

Adama Traore died in police custody in July 2016, after being arrested while riding a bike with his brother in Beaumont-sur-Oise, a small town north of Paris. According to reports, he died after complaining about problems with breathing.

The protest took place a few weeks after George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, died while being arrested in Minneapolis.

A police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes with Floyd recorded saying, "I can't breathe" and "Don't kill me." Protests sparked by Floyd's death have been taking place across the US and around the world.
