UK: Poole residents react as Scouts founder statue removal temporarily halted

United Kingdom, Poole
June 11, 2020 at 16:27 GMT -00:00 · Published

Authorities in Poole, southern England, have suspended the temporary removal of a statue of Scout founder Robert Baden-Powell, placing it under 24-hour security on Thursday, until its eventual removal. The Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council fears the statue may have become a target for vandalism in the wake of other statues being torn down in the United Kingdom.

"We don't want the statue removed, but if it has to be moved, for safety, it needs to go back, we need a date when it's coming back you know," said one man in his Scout uniform.

"The thing is we rather see it in storage for a certain amount of months than at the bottom of the harbour at the moment, and then when the time's right that it's restored to its rightful place here on the harbour," added another.

After protesters tore down the statue of slave trader Edward Colston in Bristol and authorities removed the statue of slave owner Robert Milligan in London in recent days, Baden-Powell's statue stood out as a possible target for vandalism due to the Scout founder's views on homosexuality and his reported sympathy for Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

The BCP Council had announced the statue's temporary removal in order to protect it, saying police had warned them about it being on a target list for attack.

Protests against racism have been taking place around the world in the wake of the killing of George Floyd in the US city of Minneapolis on May 25.
