Hong Kong: Students vow to continue 'battle with totalitarianism'

Hong Kong's Federation of Students pledged to continue the city's fight for its autonomy from China at a rally on Friday. Activists believe the recently announced National Security Law will give the green light to silencing the opposition.

"The authoritarian regime pushes the law again in Hong Kong, trying to eliminate the dissidents with the Hong Kong version of the National Security Law. Crime of secession, offending the country - all these crimes can eliminate the dissidents. The crime of collusion with foreign countries is more targeted at Hong Kong people who have been fighting for support internationally, to isolate Hong Kong," said a representative for the student group.

Also present at the meeting was Margaret Ng Ngoi-yee, one of the lawmakers who recently stood trial for their part in organising the months-long protests in Hong Kong.

"The police bans protest but people just don't care. If you are going to be a regime that needs to control all people's freedom of thought, speech and behaviour, then Hong Kongers are really troublesome. I deeply believe that Hong Kongers will make troubles again and again, it's our rights and it's our daily life," said the lawmaker.
