Musicians perform aboard hot air balloon to lift spirits of locked-down Berliners

Members of the German Symphony Orchestra performed a mid-air concert aboard a hot air balloon over the skies of Berlin on Tuesday, as part of an initiative dubbed "Berlin needs music!"

The musicians can be seen taking off aboard the hot air balloon before beginning to perform their pieces.

"Corona virus was the reason that we came up with this idea. Because at the moment we are not in the position to play concerts in the concerts halls because they are closed so we can't perform for an audience within an enclosed space and that’s what got us thinking, and therefore we decided if we can't play in regular spaces where people can come to us then we have go to out and be with the people," explained German Symphony Orchestra Managing Director Alexander SteinWeis.

Despite the gradual easing of lockdown measures in the city, including the reopening of bars and restaurants, many facets of life remain closed, with large concerts and gatherings among them.
