Russia: State of emergency declared in Krasnoyarsk region after massive diesel leak

Authorities declared a state of emergency in the Krasnoyarsk region on Wednesday after a massive reserve fuel tank burst and leaked 20,000 tonnes of diesel into a river near the city of Norilsk last week.

As seen in the footage, the Daldykan river, which runs close to the thermal power plant where the leak occurred, has visible water pollution.

Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier approved the state of emergency as he discussed the leak, which occurred on May 29, with local authorities.

"Why did the officials find out about this only two days later? Are we going to find out about emergencies through social networks? Do you have a problem or something?" Putin said at the meeting, criticising the local officials for not informing the federal authorities sooner about the incident.

According to Norilsk Nickel, the Russian company that owns the thermal power plant where the leak occurred, the reserve fuel tank was damaged when its supporting pillars began to sink.

Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) units are carrying out clean-up operations at the site, and efforts are being taken to separate the affected part of the river and stop the diesel and other oil products spreading further.
