French carmaker Renault announced on Friday it would cut down 15,000 jobs worldwide as part of a plan to cut costs by €2 billion ($2.2 billion), amid a decreasing sales because of the coronavirus pandemic.

"This project needs a possible resizing of our workforce with a possible impact on 15,000 jobs worldwide, including 4,600 in France," said interim Renault CEO Clotilde Delbos during a press conference in Boulogne-Billancourt. "In this unprecedented context and because it is part of Renault's DNA, we are taking a responsible approach, attentive to the industrial time, the durability of the company, the respect of the people and the rights of the employees."

"Each decision, each cost cut has been weighed up at length with employees in mind, who of course could be upset by these decisions," said Renault board of directors chairman Jean-Dominique Senard. "It is our responsibility today to take difficult decisions and we do it because we are convinced that these decisions are the good ones."

In addition to the job cuts, Renault's annual global production capacity will reportedly be decreased from its current figure of 4 million vehicles, to around 3.3 million.
