Germany: FM Maas calls for dialogue with China over Hong Kong security law

Germany, Berlin
May 29, 2020 at 11:50 GMT -00:00 · Published

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas called for dialogue over the Hong Kong security law and said that the EU-China Summit in September will be a "good opportunity for that."

"There are a lot of topics that we want and we need to discuss with China," he said from Berlin on Friday, adding "The EU-China Summit is a good opportunity for that while we want to make real progress in mutual relations."

Maas stressed however that Hong Kong's autonomy cannot be undermined. "We expect the freedoms and rights for the citizens to be protected through their basic law and the 'one country, two systems' principle," he explained.

Regarding the EU post-coronavirus recovery fund, the German minister said it is still a long way to go until talks are concluded.

"We want to emerge from the crisis stronger, he said, adding "however, we’re a long way off being able to successfully conclude the negotiations."

China’s National People’s Congress has approved national security laws for Hong Kong, in a move that is seen by many as confirmation of China sidestepping Hong Kong's own legislative body.

The new legislation might limit Hong Kong's opposition activity, ban any acts or activities that endanger China’s national security, including terrorism and separatism.

Last year, Hong Kong saw the largest protest movement in its history, which started with opposition to a now-scrapped plan to allow extradition to mainland China before evolving into an overall anti-government demonstration.
