UK: Welsh zoo on brink of extinction amid funding struggles due to COVID-19

Borth Zoo in western Wales is struggling to survive the economic impacts of the COVID-19 lockdown, as footage from Monday shows a deserted park.

Zoo owners and keepers Dean and Tracy Tweedy warned that they might soon be in a "position where we have to rehome animals or even [euthanise] them," if no other alternatives could be found. They insisted euthanasia would be an absolute "last resort," as they fear they have just enough money to feed the animals for about two weeks. Borth zoo is home to more than 500 animals.

"Since the lockdown things have been really difficult, we usually rely on the Easter period to kind of boost the income that we don't get over the winter," explained Tracy, after the zoo has been closed to the public for months due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

"Worst case scenario we wouldn't have a choice but to euthanise them," she added before asserting that she would starve before she would "let the animals starve."

Dean Tweedy said the zoo relies on "95 percent" of their income coming from ticket sales. 5 out of the 10 members of staff who normally work at the zoo have reportedly been furloughed.

The zoo has been related to a series of controversies regarding handling of the animals and the number of animal deaths in recent years.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a nationwide lockdown on March 23, in a "national effort to halt the growth of this virus." Johnson warned of there not being "enough ventilators, enough intensive care beds, enough doctors and nurses," if the UK health service became overwhelmed with COVID-19 infections.

According to the latest data collected by Johns Hopkins University, COVID-19 has infected over 241,000 people in the United Kingdom and resulted in 34,446 deaths with the virus.
