China: FM Wang says proposed security laws 'won't affect' Hong Kong's autonomy

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that proposed national security laws "won't affect" Hong Kong's freedoms or autonomy, at a press conference for the 13th National People's Congress on Sunday.

"The decisions made by the National People's Congress aim at the small minority of activities seriously threatening national security," said Wang.

He added that the law would not alter the "high degree of autonomy of Hong Kong" or "the freedom of Hong Kong residents or the interests of the foreign investors."

"We should be confident about the future of Hong Kong instead of worrying about it," added the minister..

Wang also alleged that "foreign interference has deepened in Hong Kong," stating that the new law would result in Hong Kong having a "more complete legislative system, a more stable social order and a better business environment."

The proposed legislation would ban sedition, foreign interference, and treason in the semi-autonomous territory, while circumventing Hong Kong's legislature, the Legislative Council.

The proposals provoked thousands of people onto the streets in protest on Sunday.

The annual National People's Congress which usually takes place in early March was postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak. The rescheduled congress started on Friday and will finish on May 28.
