UN: Political chief DiCarlo urges Russia, Turkey to come up with new ceasefire in Idlib

The UN's head of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo called on Russia and Turkey to agree on a new ceasefire in Syria's Idlib province. DiCarlo was speaking at a session of the UN Security Council in New York City on Friday.

"We have reaffirmed to the parties that all military operations must respect the rules of international humanitarian law. If such horrific acts and tactics persist despite global outrage, is it largely because their authors do not fear accountability and justice? Civilians in Idlib are living under daily threat and terror, seeking refuge from airstrikes and volleys of shells and mortar rounds. They are NOT asking for a pause in the fighting. They are asking for an end to the killing," said DiCarlo.

The session was called in after dozens of Turkish troops were killed in an air strike in Syria's Idlib where the Syrian army has been fighting against armed groups supported by Ankara.

"The coordinates conveyed yesterday did not mention where ultimately the Turkish soldiers died. As soon as it became clear that it happened, the Russian side took exhaustive measures to cease hostilities and to ensure the safe evacuation of the dead and injured. In order to eradicate the possibility of speculation, the Defence Minister of Russia said that the Russian airspace forces were not there to provide a military response in that particular region. We regret the fact that the Turkish soldiers died, just as we regret the reports about the death of Syrian soldiers. We are convinced that respecting the agreements, including on deconflicting will avoid such tragedies in the future," said Russia's envoy to the UN Vasily Nebenzya.

Following the incident, Turkey announced it will open borders to allow refugees to cross into the EU.
