Australia: 'He's done nothing wrong' – Assange supporters call for him to be brought home

Australia, Melbourne
February 24, 2020 at 07:27 GMT -00:00 · Published

A group of Julian Assange supporters gathered outside the British Consulate in Melbourne on Sunday, to protest the ongoing detention of WikiLeaks journalist Julian Assange and to call for him to be returned to Australia.

"They want to extradite him [Julian Assange] to America and we're opposing that. He's done nothing wrong, he's won many awards for his journalism. Same as [imprisoned US whistleblower] Chelsea Manning, she did nothing wrong by giving that footage to him. Neither of them should be imprisoned, and we think the Australian government should be bringing Julian Assange home," said Jan, one of the protesters.

The WikiLeaks co-founder has remained behind bars in high-security Belmarsh Prison since May 1, 2019, after he was sentenced to 50 weeks in prison for breaching his bail conditions to avoid extradition to Sweden on sexual assault allegations. Despite this sentence coming to an end on September 22, a British judge ordered Assange remain in prison while facing extradition to the US, due to his previous history of absconding.
