France: Defence lawyers to seek French political asylum for Assange

France, Paris

Members of Julian Assange's defence team spoke to the media in Paris on Thursday ahead of the whistleblower's upcoming US extradition trial in the UK.

The Secretary-General of Reporters without Borders Christophe Deloire participated as chair of the conference.

Addressing the press, French criminal defence lawyer Eric Dupond-Moretti stated that "what the US wishes for is a political case" adding that "this trial, besides Julian Assange, concerns all those journalists who do not possess US citizenship."

"Of course, we are working on the possibility of asking the French authorities to provide political asylum [for Assange]. Our constitution permits this," he added.

Dupond-Moretti expressed concerns over the physical and mental state of Assange, stating that "his capacities [are] reduced, he has more and more troubles speaking, he is sometimes prostrated."

His Spanish colleague Baltasar Garzon, Assange's Spanish legal assistant, alleged that in 2017, "Donald Trump's administration attempted to put pressure on Julian Assange to make statements that would be favourable to President Trump himself." He suggested that Assange's refusal to collaborate caused the international detention and extradition order.

Assange's father John Shipton concluded the conference by thanking his son's supporters ahead of the trial.
