Japan: Diamond Princess passenger recalls being quarantined ahead of evacuation *EXCLUSIVE*

An American citizen quarantined on the Diamond Princess cruise ship moored in the port of Yokohama due to a coronavirus outbreak recounted his first-hand experience of being quarantined on the ship, as US citizens aboard are expected to shortly disembark on Sunday.

Spencer Fehrenbacher gave a tour of his cabin, where he explained the difficulties in keeping it neat for nearly a month, and the requirement that he wear a face mask whenever he opened the door.

"I am about two hours away from getting off this ship. I have been on board the Diamond Princess for almost a month now, I have been quarantined for about 13 days unofficially, 12 days officially, and hopefully, here in the next few hours I will be getting on a plane to go to the United States, where I will be doing another 14-day quarantine," Spencer Fehrenbacher said.

He went on to say, however, that before being able to board the plane back to the United States, he will need to conduct an interview with the Center for Disease Control.

"Which means they'll take my temperature, they'll ask me some questions, and as long as I pass, I will be going to the US, so, fingers crossed."

According to the US Embassy in Tokyo, the passengers will be screened for symptoms of coronavirus before boarding a US Charted flight to Travis Air Force Base in California. Upon arrival, they will either stay at Travis Air Force Base or be transferred to Lackland Air Force Base for a 14-day quarantine.

The Diamond Princess Cruise Ship was quarantined when it arrived in Yokohama early last week after it emerged that some passengers who disembarked in Hong Kong last month tested positive for the flu-like respiratory illness. So far, 355 people from the ship have tested positive for the new virus that began in China, after 70 new cases were found on Sunday, February 16.

According to the latest report by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the novel coronavirus has claimed more than 1,500 lives and infected more than 67,000 worldwide.
