Libya: Displaced civilians housed in unfinished hotel just 2 km from Tripoli front line

Footage shot by Ruptly on Thursday shows civilians who fled their homes on the frontline in Tripoli and now reside in an unfinished hotel in the Abu Salim neighbourhood in southern Tripoli, just two kilometres (1,2 miles) from the frontline.

Families with children can be seen living in the hotel, occupying several rooms with mattresses, TVs and personal items, while holes from what seems to be mortar fire pepper the building's facade.

Ashour Said Sheira, his wife and their two-year-old son left their home in April 2019 and haven't returned since. Ashour recalled the day they left their home: "In Libya when you want to leave your house there is a specific time which is between 8 am and 9 am. At that time the fighters will sleep."

He explained that he took a white flag with him and the fighters let him and his family leave the area near the frontline. Ashour added that his and other families have been struggling with food and medicine supplies and if he had a chance to leave Libya, he "wouldn't regret" it.

On Tuesday, a spokesperson for the Health Ministry announced three children were killed amid shelling in a residential area of Tripoli.

The UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) blamed the Libyan National Army (LNA) for the attack, although the latter did not claim responsibility.

Fighting has been taking place around the Libyan capital since the LNA, which controls much of Libya's east and parts of the south, first launched an offensive to gain control of Tripoli from the GNA in April.
